The Brewshed® Alliance is an outreach initiative of Washington Wild designed to bring people together with a simple message: protected water makes superior beer. This initiative was developed in 2012, formed in 2013, and fully launched in 2014. By the end of 2014 we’d gone from having 8 brewery and beer community partners to over 25, from 8 events to over 20, from raising under $5,000 for conservation to over $25,000!
The Brewshed® Alliance represents a case study of a Washington Wild priority: bringing non-conservation partners to the table and showing the diverse values of wild lands and waters. In this case, how wild waters and the watersheds that protect them impact the quality of Washington beer. As water flows through the land it picks up natural minerals that give downstream beer a distinct flavor. It also picks up pollutants that then have to be laboriously taken out of the beer with great care by the brewer to ensure the end beer doesn’t have any undesirable flavors. We call this the Brewshed® connection and breweries throughout the state are joining with us to help people understand how conservation work from organizations like Washington Wild benefits the quality of the beer in their glass.
Breweries and beer community partners are just one of the many non-conservation voices that Washington Wild brings to the table as stakeholders. We also work with local businesses, outdoor recreation groups, and use stakeholders – like back country horseback riders and mountain bikers – to develop locally supported and favorable Wilderness campaigns.
